Why thick-section 7050 estimates add up quickly
7050 is commonly specified for thick aerospace plate where toughness and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking matter. Those large sections carry substantial volume, and 7050 is one of the denser common aluminum alloys, so small density shortcuts can become noticeable freight and handling errors.
T7451 is the familiar plate temper, but the heat-treatment designation does not require a separate weight factor. Nominal dimensions multiplied by the 7050 density give the theoretical stock weight.
Weight formulas used by this calculator
Plate and block
weight = thickness x width x length x density
Use one unit system for all three dimensions. Quantity multiplies the solid weight after the single-piece volume is calculated.
Round bar and solid rod
weight = pi x (diameter / 2)^2 x length x density
Diameter is the full outside dimension of solid bar. Tube and bored stock need the hollow internal volume subtracted.
Typical 7050 weight-planning uses
- Estimating thick-plate receipts for aerospace machining programs
- Checking crane, rack, and forklift loads for large blanks
- Calculating buy-to-fly ratios for hog-out components
- Comparing 7050 with 7075 at a common envelope size

Frequently asked questions
What is the density of 7050 aluminum?
This calculator uses 0.1022 lb/in3, approximately 2.83 g/cm3.
Is 7050 heavier than 7075?
Slightly. Using the site values, 7050 is about 0.7 percent heavier than 7075 at the same dimensions.
How much does one cubic foot of 7050 weigh?
One cubic foot contains 1,728 cubic inches, so theoretical 7050 weight is about 176.6 pounds.
Does the calculator include machining allowance?
It calculates the dimensions entered. Include saw, finish, or machining allowance in those dimensions when estimating the purchased blank.
