From plate dimensions to shipping weight
Plate weight is simply rectangular volume multiplied by density, but keeping dimension order and units straight is important on thick or numerous blanks. This page stays focused on 6061 plate so the density, formula, and reference values match the material on the print.
Calculated weight is nominal stock weight. Mill thickness tolerance, saw allowance, and scale accuracy can shift the physical value slightly, while machining will reduce the finished-part weight.
Weight formulas used by this calculator
Plate and block
weight = thickness x width x length x density
Use one unit system for all three dimensions. Quantity multiplies the solid weight after the single-piece volume is calculated.
Use the plate calculator to plan
- Cut-to-size 6061-T651 blanks for CNC machining
- Fixture, tooling, and machine-base plate handling
- Full-sheet and remnant rack capacity
- Piece counts and freight class preparation for plate orders

Frequently asked questions
What formula calculates 6061 plate weight?
Multiply thickness by width by length in inches, then multiply by 0.0975 lb/in3 and the quantity.
How many pounds per square foot is half-inch 6061 plate?
Half-inch 6061 plate weighs about 7.02 pounds per square foot.
How much does a 4 by 8 sheet of quarter-inch 6061 weigh?
A nominal 48 x 96 x 0.25 inch sheet weighs about 112.3 pounds.
Is plate tolerance included in the result?
No. The result uses the dimensions entered; actual mill plate can vary within its thickness and size tolerances.
