Why 6061 weight matters in everyday fabrication
6061 is the general-purpose aluminum alloy behind machine bases, fixtures, brackets, structural frames, and countless turned parts. A reliable weight estimate helps size lifting equipment, plan freight, compare stock options, and check the material line on a quote before metal reaches the saw.
Temper changes strength and machining behavior, but it does not meaningfully change density. The same 0.0975 lb/in3 value applies to common 6061-T651 plate and 6061-T6511 bar for practical estimating.
Weight formulas used by this calculator
Plate and block
weight = thickness x width x length x density
Use one unit system for all three dimensions. Quantity multiplies the solid weight after the single-piece volume is calculated.
Round bar and solid rod
weight = pi x (diameter / 2)^2 x length x density
Diameter is the full outside dimension of solid bar. Tube and bored stock need the hollow internal volume subtracted.
Common 6061 weight-estimating jobs
- Planning freight and handling for fixture plates and machine bases
- Estimating blank weight before CNC material-removal calculations
- Comparing plate, block, and round-bar stock for the same part
- Building a multi-piece cut list for a fabrication or machining job

Frequently asked questions
What density does the 6061 aluminum calculator use?
It uses 0.0975 pounds per cubic inch, equivalent to about 2.70 grams per cubic centimeter.
Does 6061-T6 weigh the same as 6061-T651?
Yes for practical weight calculations. T6 and T651 describe processing and stress relief, not a meaningful change in alloy density.
How much does a one-inch-thick 6061 plate weigh per square foot?
A one-inch-thick 6061 plate weighs about 14.04 pounds per square foot.
Can this calculator handle both 6061 plate and round bar?
Yes. Use Rectangle / Plate for plate or block and Round Bar for cylindrical stock.
