Estimating free-machining stainless stock
416 is a martensitic stainless grade modified for machinability. It appears in shafts, fittings, nuts, gears, and high-volume turned components where shop productivity matters and the corrosion requirement is less severe than for austenitic grades.
Its density is lower than 304, 316, and 17-4 in the Nox material configuration. Grade-specific calculation avoids carrying the conventional 0.289 lb/in3 stainless shortcut into bundle and production estimates.
Weight formulas used by this calculator
Round bar and solid rod
weight = pi x (diameter / 2)^2 x length x density
Diameter is the full outside dimension of solid bar. Tube and bored stock need the hollow internal volume subtracted.

Frequently asked questions
What density does the 416 calculator use?
It uses 0.280 lb/in3, approximately 7.75 g/cm3.
How much does one-inch 416 round bar weigh per foot?
One-inch-diameter 416 round bar weighs about 2.64 pounds per foot.
Is 416 lighter than 304 stainless?
Yes. With the configured values, 416 is about 3.1 percent lighter for the same solid dimensions.
Can I estimate a batch of saw-cut blanks?
Yes. Enter cut length and quantity, or add several sizes to the cut list for a combined theoretical weight.
