Raw-stock weight before machining and aging
17-4 PH combines stainless corrosion resistance with strength developed through precipitation aging. Many complex parts are roughed or finished from Condition A bar and then aged, so purchased-blank weight is valuable for material planning and outside-process shipping.
17-4 is less dense than 304 and 316. Using a generic austenitic stainless value would overstate theoretical weight by roughly two and a half percent at identical dimensions.
Weight formulas used by this calculator
Round bar and solid rod
weight = pi x (diameter / 2)^2 x length x density
Diameter is the full outside dimension of solid bar. Tube and bored stock need the hollow internal volume subtracted.
17-4 PH bar weight applications
- Aerospace brackets, fittings, and structural hardware
- Valve stems, pump shafts, and oilfield components
- Condition A blanks moving to an aging operation
- High-strength corrosion-resistant tooling and fasteners

Frequently asked questions
What density is used for 17-4 PH stainless?
The configured density is 0.282 lb/in3, approximately 7.80 g/cm3.
Does H900 weigh differently from Condition A?
Not enough to require a separate practical stock-weight calculation. Dimensions and the 17-4 alloy density drive the estimate.
Is 17-4 lighter than 304 stainless?
Yes. At equal volume, the configured densities make 17-4 about 2.4 percent lighter than 304.
Should I use finished or raw dimensions?
Use raw blank dimensions for purchasing, freight, and saw planning; use finished geometry when estimating the completed part mass.
