Stainless Steel Bar Weight Calculator

Choose 304, 316, 17-4 PH, or 416 stainless and enter the exact round bar diameter and cut length. Alloy-specific densities prevent a generic steel estimate from hiding real differences across a bundle.

Stainless grades do not all weigh the same

304 and 316 are austenitic grades with similar density, while precipitation-hardening 17-4 and free-machining 416 are lighter for the same volume. The difference is modest on one short blank but becomes useful when planning long mill lengths, pallets, or production quantities.

This tool calculates theoretical solid round bar weight only. Grade selection still depends on corrosion, strength, heat treatment, magnetic response, and machinability requirements—not density alone.

Weight formulas used by this calculator

Round bar and solid rod

weight = pi x (diameter / 2)^2 x length x density

Diameter is the full outside dimension of solid bar. Tube and bored stock need the hollow internal volume subtracted.

Use the stainless bar calculator for

  • Comparing candidate grades at a fixed shaft envelope
  • Estimating pallet and bundle weights for incoming bar
  • Planning saw cuts for maintenance and production jobs
  • Checking raw-stock mass before machining or heat treatment

Frequently asked questions

Which stainless grades are included?

The selector includes 304, 316, 17-4 PH, and 416 stainless steel using the densities in the Nox quoting configuration.

Are 304 and 316 the same weight?

For practical estimating on this site, both use 0.289 lb/in3. Their corrosion performance and chemistry differ even though the nominal density value is the same.

Why is 416 stainless lighter than 304?

Their alloy chemistry and microstructure differ. The configured density is 0.280 lb/in3 for 416 versus 0.289 lb/in3 for 304.

Can the calculator total mixed stainless grades?

Yes. Add each grade and size to the cut list; the calculator totals all lines in pounds and kilograms.
