The Real Comparison Is Cost Per Part, Not Cost Per Piece
A catalog price on a standard size looks simple and is often misleading, because the number you actually care about is what the finished part cost you. The industry term is buy-to-fly: the ratio of material you purchase to material that ends up in the part. On a catalog buy you take whatever standard size is closest and machine away the difference. On a cut-to-size buy you pay for a piece closer to net shape and throw away less.
- Every pound you machine into chips is a pound you paid for at full price and will sell back as scrap at a fraction of it.
- It is also spindle time. Removing an extra 0.75 inch off a face is machine hours and tooling wear, and on 7075 it is meaningful tooling wear.
- The gap widens with thickness. On thin sheet a standard size is usually close enough. On a 3 inch plate, buying 4 inch because that was the catalog step is a very expensive rounding error.
- It widens with quantity. One bracket, buy the catalog piece. Fifty brackets, and the cut-to-size math is not close.

The Certification Question
McMaster offers material certificates for traceability, which is appropriate for most commercial work and is more than many catalog sellers provide. On regulated work the requirement is usually more specific than a certificate of traceability, and the distinction is worth understanding before you commit material to an aerospace or defense job.
- Commercial and general structural work: a traceability certificate is typically fine.
- Aerospace to a spec callout such as AMS 4045 or AMS 4050: you need documentation tied to the heat and the specification, not a general certificate.
- Defense with a DFARS 252.225-7009 flow-down: you need melt-source documentation showing where the metal was melted. This is the requirement most often discovered late.
- If you are unsure which applies, read the clause on your purchase order before you buy the material rather than after you machine it.
