What Sizes Does Aluminum Plate Come In? 6061, 7075, and 7050 Stock Thicknesses and Dimensions

Before you can order aluminum plate you have to know what shapes it actually exists in, and this is where a lot of drawings go wrong. Specifying a 1.375 inch plate or a 72 inch width is easy to do in CAD and expensive to do in reality. Plate is a mill product, produced in a defined ladder of thicknesses and a small number of master sizes, and material that falls outside that ladder becomes a special mill order with a lead time measured in months. Here is what 6061, 7075, and 7050 plate actually comes in, which sizes ship today, and how to design so your material is not the thing holding up the job.

Standard Mill Master Plate Sizes

Aluminum plate is rolled and shipped in master sizes. Nearly all North American plate arrives in one of three footprints, and everything you buy cut-to-size is cut out of one of them. Note that the dimensions carry a deliberate half-inch of overage: a plate described as 48 x 144 is produced at 48.5 x 144.5, so the buyer can trim mill edges and still hit nominal.

NoteWidths above 60 inches and lengths above 144 inches exist but are specialty products from a limited number of mills. If your part needs a 72 inch dimension, expect a mill order, a long lead time, and a significant premium. It is usually cheaper to redesign around a 60 inch width or to weld up from 6061.

Where Sheet Ends and Plate Begins

The 0.250 inch boundary is not arbitrary and it matters more than most buyers realize, because it determines which tempers you can even buy. Below 0.250 inch the product is classified as sheet, and 6061 is supplied as T6. At 0.250 inch and above it is plate, and 6061 is supplied as T651, which has been stress-relief stretched after solution heat treatment. That stretch is the whole point: it removes the residual stress that would otherwise make your part warp as you machine material out of it. If you are machining, you want plate and you want the stretched temper.

The Thickness Ladder

Thickness availability follows a ladder that gets coarser as it gets thicker. Up to 1 inch you can generally get sixteenths and eighths. From 1 to 3 inches the standard steps are quarters. Above 3 inches you are into half-inch and then full-inch increments. Anything between the rungs is a mill order or a piece that has to be machined down from the next size up, which means you pay for the material you remove.

NoteA 1.375 inch requirement is the classic example of an off-ladder specification. You will either wait for a mill roll or buy 1.500 inch and machine off 0.125, paying for material that becomes chips. Rounding the design to 1.250 or 1.500 usually costs nothing in function and saves weeks.

What Each Alloy Is Actually Available In

The three alloys do not share the same envelope. 6061 goes the thickest because it is a commodity product produced broadly, and its quench sensitivity is low enough that heavy sections behave predictably. 7075 tops out lower because thick sections develop stress corrosion vulnerability, which is precisely the problem 7050 was invented to solve. Thickness Is Where Availability Actually Breaks Down

Alloy and size both matter, but the variable that most often blows up a schedule is thickness in the 7xxx alloys. Thin and mid-gauge plate is widely stocked. Thick 7050 is a different world: fewer mills are qualified, aerospace and defense programs consume most of the output, and DPAS-rated defense orders take priority in the queue. Thick 7050 plate above 3 inches routinely runs 12 to 20 week mill lead times. If your program needs it, buy from stock or buy early.

Cut to Size, Full Plate, or Drop

Once you know the thickness you need, you choose how much of a plate to buy. Full mill plate gives the lowest per-pound rate but commits you to hundreds or thousands of pounds. Cut-to-size means you only pay for the rectangle you need. A drop is a remnant from a previous cut, already certified and already on the floor, which is usually the cheapest and fastest option if your part fits inside one.

NoteWe cut on bandsaws with a 0.08 inch kerf and sell any rectangular size out of stock plate. Every cut also generates a drop, which goes back into inventory rather than into scrap. That is why checking the drop inventory before ordering a fresh cut is worth thirty seconds of your time.

Designing Around Standard Sizes

A handful of habits will keep material off your critical path.

  • Round thickness to the ladder. Specify 1.500 rather than 1.375 unless the extra precision does real work. Off-ladder gauges cost weeks.
  • Keep parts inside 60 inches in one direction. That is the widest standard plate. A 61 inch part turns a routine order into a specialty mill buy.
  • Nest for yield before you order. Two parts that fit side by side in a 60 inch width cost far less than two parts that each need their own plate.
  • Add machining allowance, then check the ladder again. If your finished dimension is 0.98 inch and you want 1.000 stock, verify the thickness tolerance leaves you enough material at the thin end of the band.
  • Do not specify above 0.250 inch and then expect T6. Plate at and above 0.250 comes as T651. If a drawing calls for 6061-T6 at 1 inch, it needs correcting to T651.
  • Check thickness availability before committing to an alloy. If your design needs 4 inches and the schedule is tight, 6061 at 4 inches is routine while 7050 at 4 inches may be a 16 week wait.

What to Put on the Purchase Order

A complete plate PO line removes an entire round of back-and-forth. Six fields cover it.

  • Alloy and temper. 6061-T651, 7075-T651, 7075-T7351, 7050-T7451. Not just 6061.
  • Thickness, width, and length, in that order, and state whether dimensions are minimum or nominal.
  • Specification, if your program requires one. AMS 4027 or AMS-QQ-A-250/11 for 6061, AMS 4045 or AMS-QQ-A-250/12 for 7075-T651, AMS 4050 for 7050-T7451.
  • Origin requirement. DFARS-compliant, domestic melt, or any origin. These are three different products at three different prices.
  • Certification requirement. Mill certs with heat number and lot traceability, plus any ultrasonic or chemistry requirements from the spec.
  • Quantity and required date, so the supplier can tell you immediately whether it is a stock pull or a mill order.

Plate exists in a defined set of shapes: three master footprints, a thickness ladder that coarsens as it thickens, and a 0.250 inch line that separates sheet from plate and T6 from T651. Design inside that set and material stops being a schedule risk. 6061 covers 0.25 to 10 inches and is available almost everywhere; 7075 and 7050 run 0.25 to 6 inches with availability tightening sharply in thick sections, especially 7050 above 3 inches. When a design does need something off-ladder, know that up front so the 12 to 20 week mill lead time lands in the plan rather than in the middle of the build.

Can I get aluminum plate cut to a custom size?

Yes. Any rectangular size can be cut from stock plate. We cut on bandsaws with a 0.08 inch kerf and ship from Detroit, typically same day to two days. Cut-to-size carries a higher per-pound rate than full mill plate but you only pay for the rectangle you need, which is usually far cheaper in total for one-off and prototype work.

What is a drop and why is it cheaper?

A drop is a remnant left over after a larger plate is cut. It is the same certified material with the same mill paperwork, it is already on the floor, and the seller is recovering value from metal that is already paid for. If your part fits inside an existing drop, it is usually the lowest total cost option available and it ships immediately, with no mill lead time at all.

Why can I not get a 1.375 inch aluminum plate?

Because it is off the standard thickness ladder. Between 1 and 3 inches, plate is rolled in quarter-inch increments, so 1.250 and 1.500 are standard while 1.375 is not. Your options are a mill order with a lead time of several months, or buying 1.500 inch and machining off 0.125 inch, which means paying for material that becomes chips. In most cases rounding the design to a ladder thickness costs nothing in function.
