Company Certification Is Not Material Certification
Two different things share the word certified and buyers conflate them constantly. A supplier telling you they are ISO 9001:2015 certified has told you about their management system. It says nothing about the piece of metal in the crate.
- Company certification, such as ISO 9001:2015 or AS9100, means an auditor verified the supplier's processes. It is a reason to trust the process, not a document about your heat.
- Material certification, the mill cert or MTR, is about your specific metal: chemistry, mechanical properties, heat number, and ideally melt source.

When You Do Not Need Certs
Certification adds real cost through handling and inventory segregation, so buying it for work that does not need it is waste.
- Shop fixtures, jigs, and tooling that are not deliverable articles. Check with your quality team, but usually out of scope.
- Hobby and personal projects. A free MTR by checkbox from a catalog seller is more than enough.
- Non-structural covers, brackets, and guards on commercial equipment with no traceability requirement.
- If none of your work is regulated, the supplier with no published certification policy may simply be the cheapest correct answer.
