T651 plate and T6511 bar
6061 combines moderate strength, corrosion resistance and machinability for general structural parts, fixtures and housings. T651 plate is solution heat treated, stress relieved by stretching and artificially aged. T6511 is the designation used for extruded bar.
The stretching step distinguishes T651 plate from plain T6. It reduces residual stress before machining; the drawing’s temper requirement still determines which material to select.
Machining and applications
Use sharp tools and effective chip evacuation for deep pockets. Cutting fluid can help finish and heavy cuts. Workholding and the amount and sequence of material removal affect movement.
